When people first hear of realtime reporting, it often inspires a bout of confusion. How does it differ from “regular” reporting? The answer is simple enough, but it is still a substantial one. With realtime reporting, court reporters don’t have to go back after the legal proceedings to translate the phonetic transcript into “real English.” The transcript is immediately available to clients as it is being recorded thanks to a hookup from the shorthand machine to the attorney’s laptop, or another monitor.
